NOAA selects Google Cloud H4D infrastructure for operational forecasting
NOAA is moving its operational numerical weather prediction system toward Google Cloud’s H4D virtual machines for greater scale and speed.
NOAA selected Google Cloud as the primary high-performance-computing provider for its Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System. The planned transition uses H4D virtual machines to run large atmospheric models and is among the first moves of operational numerical weather prediction directly to public cloud infrastructure.
Forecasting is a strong example of AI and HPC working together rather than one replacing the other. Numerical models require immense computation, while AI can help improve workflows, scenario generation and the use of environmental data.
The announcement also raises operational questions that apply to any critical cloud workload: resilience, data governance, reproducibility, procurement oversight and a clear ability to validate results independently. Faster output is valuable only if operators can trust and act on it.
