How agencies can model GPT-5.6 Luna, Terra and Sol costs
OpenAI’s 30 July price changes make model routing—not simply choosing the cheapest model—the central agency economics decision.
OpenAI lowered GPT-5.6 Luna pricing by 80% and Terra pricing by 20% on 30 July, while adding Sol Fast mode at up to 2.5 times standard speed for latency-sensitive API work. That changes unit economics for agencies running recurring research, drafting and production workflows.
A practical routing policy starts with Luna for high-volume classification, first drafts, summaries and controlled transformations. Terra is a better default when daily client work needs stronger judgement. Reserve Sol—or Sol Fast when delivery time matters—for difficult planning, sensitive final review and complex multi-step work.
Cost models should count more than tokens: include retries, editing time, quality assurance, tool calls and the cost of an incorrect output. Measure each workflow with representative client inputs and make escalation to a stronger model explicit rather than automatic.
